Blaze halts Thailand v Bahrain match
A fire stopped the Thailand v Bahrain World Cup 2002 qualifier after 25 minutes of play. No supporters or workers were injured in the blaze, which started in the electric control room of the Rajamangala national stadium.
Luckily there were only a few thousand fans in the stadium, which can hold 60,000. The game was abandoned and will be replayed at a later as yet undecided date.
The stadium officials did not evacuate the ground immediately, and many fans watched the fire from their seats before they were removed.
Thailand's coach, Peter Withe, said:
'What can you say? It was an act of God. Nature took its course.'
Neither team is capable of qualifying for next year's World Cup Finals.
