Heroic Colombia coach to go
Francisco Maturana, the Colombia manager who led his side to a historic Copa America triumph, will vacate his position after his team's World Cup campaign.
If Colombia do qualify for the 2002 Finals, an increasingly unlikely outcome, Maturana will be asked to leave after the tournament. If they fail to qualify, he will go immediately.
Maturana became a national hero in July when Colombia hosted and won the Copa America. Although Argentina had dropped out of the competition, Colombia's victory was still a major achievement.
Colombia currently lie in sixth place, four points behind Brazil and Uruguay who are tied on points. 7th September 2001 |
