England edge closer

England took one more step to a place in the 2002 World Cup with an unconvincing 2-0 win over a resolute Albanian side last night.

The tension was obvious in both players and crowd until man of the moment Michael Owen scored just before half time. There were plenty more nerves in the second half until Robbie Fowler's individual brilliance sealed the win in the 88th minute.

After Saturday's legendary performance in Munich, the three points were all the mattered and in the end that is what England got.

They were brought down-to-earth, however, by a neat Albanian unit and had to work hard for the victory.

England are now in pole position in Group 9, and a win over Greece would take them to the World Cup Finals.
