Argentina start with win over Nigeria

Gabriel Batistuta scored the decisive goal in this Group F opener, which sends the pre-tournament favourites to the top of Group F.

Apart from a superb individual performance from Nigeria goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu, the winning margin could have been far greater. Shorunmu saved well from Ortega and Gonzalez, although Jay-Jay Okocha nearly scored for the Africans.

Batigol has now scored in the three World Cup Finals in which he has played, but although he scored the winner, he also missed quite a few easy chances to put the game beyond the reach of Nigeria.

Argentina

Cavallero, Placente, Sorin, Pocchettino, Samuel, Zanetti, Simeone, Veron (Aimar 78), Ortega, Claudio Lopez (Gonzalez 45), Batistuta (Crespo 81)

Nigeria
