Mexico beat 10 men of Croatia

Mexico are well placed in Group G after beating an ageing Croatia side 1-0. The goal came from the penalty spot after Boris Zivkovic brought down Cuauhtemoc Blanco.

The incident resulted in Zivkovic being sent-off and Blanco himself converting the penalty. The game itself was fairly drab, with few goal scoring chances from either side. Croatia, after a good performance at the 1998 World Cup, looked in need of fresh talent.

After falling behind, Croatia gave themselves little chance of getting back into the game when they substituted both their forwards Davor Suker and Alen Boksic.

Croatia

Pletikosa, Simunic, Tomas, Zivkovic, Robert Kovac, Jarni, Niko Kovac, Prosinecki (Rapaic 45), Soldo, Boksic (Stanic 67), Suker (Saric 64)

Mexico

Perez, Vidrio, Marquez, Carmona, Morales, Torrado, Caballero, Luna, Mercado, Borguetti (Hernandez 68), Blanco (Palencia 79)
