South Africa grab draw against Paraguay

South Africa equalised with a last minute penalty to take a point from their opening match against Paraguay, coming back from a 2 goal deficit to draw 2-2.

Quinton Fortune scored the spot-kick in injury time, when Sibusiso Zuma was brought down by Paraguay goalkeeper Ricardo Tavarelli. Roque Santa Cruz and Francisco Arce had given Paraguay their lead, before it was cut by an own goal from Estanislao Struway.

Paraguay enjoyed the bulk of possession in the first half, and were far more creative with the ball.

Arce made the first from a free kick, which Santa Cruz converted at the far post. Another free kick by Arce doubled Paraguay's lead early in the second half, this time a direct shot which went in off the bar.

After a period of pressure, South Africa forced a goal when Teboho Mokoena's shot was deflected into the Paraguay goal by defender Struway. The late, and foolhardy challenge by Tavarelli gave Fortune a chance to claim his first international goal, and a point for his country, which he gladly took.
