France lose to Senegal in shock opener
Senegal have beaten France 1-0 in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup, with Papa Bouba Diop scoring the crucial goal.
A disappointing French performance lacking the inspiration of Zinedine Zidane, could not break down a spirited Senegal team, despite fielding all their other star names. The Senegal win returns $95 for a $10 stake.
France played at a very slow tempo, and created relatively few chances. Without Zidane and Robert Pires their midfield lacked creativity, providing few chances for the strikers.
Aliou Cisse, the Senegal captain, was superb in defence, and Papa Bouba Diop created enough chaos between Petit and Barthez to steal the only goal of the game.
