Deisler will not play in World Cup

German playmaker Sebastian Deisler has been ruled out of the 2002 World Cup Finals with an injury to his right knee.

The news comes as a big blow to Germany as he follows Scholl, Nowotny and Worns in dropping out of the squad. With four of their more experienced players sidelined, the responsibility will fall on the younger members to deliver.

This especially applies to Michael Ballack, who after a magnificent season at club level will be hoping to shine at the sports biggest event.

Manager Rudi Voller will have to name a replacement midfielder by Tuesday.
