Belgium announce World Cup squad
Robert Waseige has announced his Belgium squad, which includes Bernd Thijs and Gaetan Englebert as replacements for injured players.
Philippe Clement and Joos Valgaeren pulled out of the preliminary squad, and so the two younger players have been drafted in. Although they have little international experience, both have had excellent seasons with their club sides.
Waseige has taken a risk by including players who are not fully fit. Both Branko Strupar and Sven Vermant are carrying 'light injuries' and Glen De Boeck picked up a knock in training.
The complete Belgium squad:
Geert De Vlieger (Willem II), Frederic Herpoel (Ghent) and Francky Vandendriessche (Excelsior Mouscron), Glen De Boeck (Anderlecht), Eric Deflandre (Lyon), Nico Van Kerckhoven (Schalke 04), Daniel Van Buyten (Marseille), Peter Van Der Heyden (FC Bruges), Eric Van Meir (Standard Liege) and Jacky Peeters (Ghent), Bart Goor (Hertha Berlin), Timmy Simons (FC Bruges), Danny Boffin (Saint Truidense), Yves Vanderhaeghe (Anderlecht), Gaetan Englebert (FC Bruges), Bernd Thijs (Racing Genk), Sven Vermant (Schalke 04), Johan Walem (Standard Liege) and Gert Verheyen (FC Bruges), Marc Wilmots (Schalke 04), Wesley Sonck (Racing Genk), Mbo Mpenza (Excelsior Mouscron) and Branko Strupar (Derby County)
