Baghdad confirmed for Iraq/Thailand game
FIFA have turned down Thailand's request for their Asian World Cup qualifier against Iraq on Friday to be moved away from Baghdad.
Last week United States and British planes attacked military targets in the south of Iraq. FIFA deny that the players' safety will be put at risk.
The Thai Football Association's secretary-general Worawi Makudi wrote to FIFA regarding a venue change citing player welfare as a cause.
The match is one of the opening fixtures in the second phase of AFC qualifying. Iraq and Thailand compete in Group A, the winner of which will qualify for the finals with the best side from Group B. 15th August 2001 |
