Figo will play on through injury
Luis Figo has said that he will play in both the Champions League Final and the World Cup, despite an ankle problem that has troubled him for much of the season.
Antonio Oliveira, the Portugal manager, has expressed concerns for his star player, who he sees as crucial to Portugal's chances. It has not been deemed necessary to operate on the ankle, but fixture congestion recently has prevented it from healing.
The issue has prayed on Oliveira's mind, and he is hoping that he will not have to omit Figo from his team sheet for Portugal's opening match against the United States. In his own words:
'Figo is like our flag. Obviously I'm concerned.'
'He is a very disciplined player, with a lot of personality. He overcomes difficult times through his strength of character, ambition and desire to play for the national team.' 8th May 2002 |
