Romario will not star in World Cup

Romario has been left out of the Brazil World Cup squad by manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, despite huge popular demand for his inclusion.

The entire nation, including some leading politicians, called for the disruptive but genius striker to go to Japan and South Korea but Scolari has picked the squad that he thinks will lead Brazil back to glory.

Scolari acknowledged that Romario would have been a popular choice, but explained his decision:

'I hear the fans but I'm the one who has to define what is more interesting for the national team.'

'I prefer to be a scapegoat if we lose than to hear to other's ideas on the team.'

The full squad is as follows:

Rogerio Ceni (Sao Paulo), Marcos (Palmeiras), Dida (Corinthians), Cafu (AS Roma), Belletti (Sao Paulo), Junior (Parma), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid), Lucio (Bayer Leverkusen), Roque Junior (AC Milan), Anderson Polga (Gremio), Edmilson (Olympique Lyon), Gilberto Silva (Atletico Mineiro), Emerson Ferreira (AS Roma), Juninho Paulista (Flamengo), Kaka (Sao Paulo), Kleberson (Atletico Paranaense), Vampeta (Corinthians), Ronaldinho Gaucho (Paris St Germain), Ronaldo (Inter Milan), Luizao (Gremio), Edilson (Cruzeiro), Denilson (Real Betis), Rivaldo (Barcelona)
