Maldini to be new Paraguay coach
Paraguay have chosen Cesare Maldini to be their new manager for the 2002 World Cup. The Paraguayan Football Association unanimously voted for Maldini, and agreed financial terms.
The formal signing of the contract will take place in South America in the New Year. Despite leading Paraguay to the World Cup Finals, former manager Markarian was sacked after losing the last two qualifiers.
Jose Luis Chilavert, Paraguay's captain and goalkeeper extraordinaire, has already given his support to Maldini.
'Maldini can lead Paraguay successfully at the World Cup. Owing to the characteristics of Paraguayan football, an Italian coach would fit in perfectly.'
Paraguay are currently second favourites to win Group 2. Spain are expected to top the group ahead of Paraguay, South Africa and Slovenia. 19th December 2001 |
