Ecuador qualify for their first Finals
Ecuador broke new ground when they qualified for their first ever World Cup by drawing 1-1 with Uruguay in Quito's Olympic Stadium.
They clinched one of the four precious qualification spots in South America, sparking off double celebrations, as the draw was enough to take Paraguay to the World Cup as well.
A consequence of the draw is hugely increased pressure on Brazil. After losing 3-1 to Bolivia, they now have to win their last qualifier against a resurgent Venezuela on November 14th.
Also in the race for the last place are Uruguay and Colombia. Whoever finishes in fifth position will face a very tricky tie against OFC qualifying winners Australia. 9th November 2001 |
